The Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians (MI) booked their place in their second TATA Women's Premier League (WPL) final with a resounding 47-run win in the TATA WPL 2025 Eliminator against Gujarat Giants (GG). Mumbai Indians - bidding to become the first team to win two WPL titles - will face Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday, March 15th, in a rematch of the 2023 final.

MI were dominant from start to finish in the Eliminator. Batting first, they put up the highest team total in a TATA WPL playoff game - 213/4 in 20 overs - led by Natalie Sciver Brunt (77 off 41) and Hayley Matthews' (77 off 50) magnificent knocks. Player-of-the-Match Matthews was also the pick of the MI bowlers with 3-31, while Purple Cap holder Amelia Kerr (2-28) and three runouts capped off a near perfect bowling and fielding display, as GG were bowled out for 166.

Gujarat Giants, who were without one of their key players in Deandra Dottin (ruled out with an injury), put Mumbai Indians in to bat first.

A nervy start saw Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews (dropped on five by Beth Mooney) both enjoying a bit of good luck early on.

Bhatia’s luck wore off sooner than later. Danielle Gibson, on her TATA WPL debut, struck with her second delivery as Bhatia pulled one straight to Bharti Fulmali at mid-wicket and MI were 26/1 in the fifth over.

Matthews, however, rode her luck. She took the attack to GG with a hat-trick of fours off Priya Mishra in the eighth over, shortly after Matthews and Orange Cap holder Natalie Sciver-Brunt combined to get three boundaries off Gibson’s over.

The duo did not look back thereafter. Matthews got to her third fifty this season off 36 deliveries and MI romped to 100/1 at the 11-over mark. Sciver-Brunt kept up the momentum from the other end, smashing two massive sixes off Gibson, getting to her fifth half-century of the season - the most for a player in a single TATA WPL season - in the process.

Matthews and Sciver-Brunt brought up a 100-run stand off just 60 deliveries and set up the home side well for a big flourish at the death as they were 140/1 with five overs to go.

Another huge over followed, courtesy of two sixes and a four from Matthews. Kashvee Gautam broke the 123-run partnership as Mooney made no mistake behind the stumps on this occasion to complete a catch and Matthews walked back for a 50-ball 77.

There was no respite though for GG as MI skipper Harmanpreet Kaur joined Sciver-Brunt in the middle and the two players upped the ante even further. Helped by a couple of more dropped catches, they put on 39 runs off just 16 balls for the third wicket. While Sciver-Brunt was dismissed for a stunning 41-ball 77 in the penultimate over, Kaur’s blitz of 36(12) which included four sixes took MI to 213/4 in 20 overs - the highest team total in a TATA WPL playoff game.

The Hayley Matthews show was not over just yet. She took a superb catch at first slip diving to her right off Shabnim Ismail to dismiss Beth Mooney in the very first over of GG’s chase. After Harleen Deol was run-out due to a mix-up, Matthews cleaned up the dangerous Ashleigh Gardner for 8(4) and GG were left reeling at 43/3 at the end of the powerplay.

The Aussie-English pairing of Phoebe Litchfield and Danielle Gibson then rebuilt for GG with some impressive shotmaking. But yet another run-out led to another huge setback for GG as Gibson fell short of her crease while completing a second run and walked back for 34(24), courtesy of some accurate fielding in the deep by Amanjot Kaur.

Litchfield followed a couple of overs later as she was beaten in the flight by Purple Cap holder Amelia Kerr, before a third-run out, of Gautam on this occasion, summed up GG's night. With 102 runs needed off the last 7 overs, Bharti Fulmali (30 off 20) and Simran Shaikh (17 off 8) provided a bit of impetus but Matthews and Kerr bagged a second wicket each to end any hopes of a GG comeback.

Matthews rounded off a match-winning all-round display with the final wicket of the innings as MI sealed a 47-run win to storm into their second TATA WPL final.
