Delhi Capitals stormed to the top of the TATA WPL 2025 Points Table with a commanding six-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, in Match 10. A ruthless bowling display set the tone before a composed run chase ensured the Meg Lanning-led side bounced back in style.

Facing each other for the first time this season, both teams were desperate for a win after previous losses. However, DC seized control early, making the most of the helpful conditions. The experienced new-ball duo of Marizanne Kapp (2/17) and Shikha Pandey (2/18) ripped through GG’s top order, restricting them to a modest 127/9. Jess Jonassen (61* off 32) and Shafali Verma (44 off 27) led a clinical chase, with Jonassen’s composed maiden WPL fifty earning her the Player of the Match.

Chasing 128, GG started with discipline, exploiting movement off the surface. Their efforts paid off as Kashvee Gautam produced a peach of an inswinger to castle DC skipper Meg Lanning. In came Jess Jonassen at No.3, forming a left-right partnership with Shafali Verma. After a watchful start, the duo shifted gears, taking 13 runs off the final over of the Powerplay from Ashleigh Gardner, pushing DC to 46/1.

Shafali then took on Priya Mishra, launching her for two towering sixes, bringing up the fifty-run stand with Jonassen. The boundaries kept flowing, with Shafali smashing Gardner for a six and a four before the GG skipper had her LBW for ( 44 off 27), ending a brisk knock.

However, Jonassen’s composure ensured there were no hiccups. She reached her maiden WPL fifty with a sublime cover drive off Tanuja Kanwar. GG fought back with two stunning catches thanks to Bharti Fulmali dismissing Jemimah Rodrigues and Beth Mooney holding onto Annabel Sutherland, but it was too little too late for GG.

Jonassen remained unbeaten on 61 off 32 (9 fours, 2 sixes), steering DC home in just 15.1 overs. Appropriately, it was Kapp who finished the game with a boundary, ensuring DC’s dominance with both bat and ball.

Earlier today, having put into bat, Gujarat Giants' new opening pair, Beth Mooney and Harleen Deol, failed to make an impact as Delhi Capitals' seasoned new-ball duo, Marizanne Kapp (2 for 17) and Shikha Pandey (2 for 18), dominated from the outset. Bowling with precision and discipline, they exploited the assistance from the Bengaluru pitch, making scoring difficult.

Kapp set the tone with a brilliant outswinger that had Harleen caught behind, triggering a collapse. Debutant Phoebe Litchfield followed suit in the same over, trapped LBW as Kapp delivered a sensational double-wicket maiden over. Shikha Pandey then joined the carnage, dismissing Mooney on the first ball of the fifth over, courtesy of a well-judged catch by Niki Prasad. The Pandey-Prasad duo struck again immediately, removing Kashvee Gautam and leaving Pandey on a hat-trick.

At the end of the Powerplay, Gujarat Giants were reeling at 31/4, completely undone by DC’s masterclass in swing bowling.

Building on the early dominance of their new-ball bowlers, Delhi Capitals tightened their grip by stifling Gujarat Giants' scoring. Titas Sadhu, making her season debut, struck a crucial blow by dismissing the in-form GG captain Ashleigh Gardner (3 off 9) with a superb in-swinger. This key breakthrough intensified the pressure on GG.

Deandra Dottin (26 off 24), however, fought back with her trademark power-hitting, offering GG a glimmer of hope. She struck a boundary off Annabel Sutherland in the 11th over but fell soon after as Sutherland had the final say, cleaning her up with a brilliant in-swinger. GG slumped to 61/6 after 11 overs.

Bharti Fulmali (40* off 290and Tanuja Kanwar (16 off 24) then staged a spirited recovery, launching their counterattack in the 15th over. Fulmali pulled Minnu Mani for a six over fine leg, gaining confidence before hammering a four and a six off Jess Jonassen in the next over. Kanwar provided steady support as the duo stitched together a record-breaking 51-run stand—the highest seventh-wicket partnership in WPL history.

However, their resurgence was cut short by a mix-up, leading to Kanwar’s run-out (16 off 24). Fulmali, finished on a high with an unbeaten 40 off 29 balls, laced with four boundaries and two sixes. Her late flourish helped GG post a respectable 127/9 in 20 overs that included a boundary in the last ball of the last over, ensuring a fighting total after early setbacks.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 131/4 (Jess Jonassen 61*) in 15.1 beat Gujarat Giants 127/9 in 20 overs (B. Fulmali 40, M.Kapp 2/17)
