Fueled by a scintillating all-round performance from Natalie Sciver-Brunt, Mumbai Indians (MI) surged to the top of the TATA Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 points table with a commanding eight-wicket victory over UP Warriorz (UPW). Harmanpreet Kaur's side also registered a hat-trick of wins since losing a nail-biter to Delhi Capitals in match two.

New Orange Cap holder Sciver-Brunt's 3-18 in four overs was instrumental in restricting UPW to 142/9, before her 44-ball 75* in the run-chase took MI over the line with three overs to spare. It was not all Sciver-Brunt though as Hayley Matthews also chipped in with a 59(50) in the chase to go with her 1-38 with the ball in hand.

Asked to bat first by MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur, UPW suffered an early setback with Kiran Navgire walking back in the first over itself after hitting a Nat Sciver-Brunt bouncer straight to Shabnim Ismail at mid-on.

However, their plan to promote Grace Harris to the top of the order worked to perfection. The Harris juggernaut began with a hat-trick of fours in the second over of the innings off Ismail, before she sent the ball flying to all parts of the ground in a 20-run fifth over off Hayley Matthews.

Vrinda Dinesh also contributed to the run-scoring with some fine placement and UPW were flying at 62/1 after 6 overs.

The Harris-Ismail saga continued. Harris sent another ball sailing towards long-on, where Ismail dropped a simple catch. However, she made amends in the very next over, settling under another skier off Amelia Kerr’s bowling as Harris walked back for an impressive 26-ball 45.

Then came UPW’s collapse, set into motion by 20-year-old MI leg-spinner Sanskriti Gupta. The youngster ended Dinesh’s stay (33 off 30), before cleaning up Tahlia McGrath with a yorker just three deliveries later.

Skipper Harmanpreet then hung onto a one-handed stunner at short fine leg to dismiss her opposite number, Deepti Sharma, off Matthews and left UPW reeling at 93/5 after 12 overs.

Sciver-Brunt came back to first dismiss Shweta Sehrawat - who was instrumental in UPW’s comeback en route to the Super Over against RCB - before then getting the prized scalp of Chinelle Henry (7 off 8) who holed out in the deep. UPW thus lost six wickets for 42 runs.

Sciver-Brunt was the pick of the MI bowlers with 3-18 in her four overs, thus also becoming the joint-highest wicket-taker this season with seven wickets. Ismail also chipped in with two timber strikes in the penultimate over and UPW ended their innings at 142/9.

The start to MI's innings was a contrast to that of UPW. They managed to score only 18 runs in the first five overs, including the early loss of Yastika Bhatia. Coming into this game 40 runs behind Orange Cap holder Ellyse Perry, Nat Sciver-Brunt broke the shackles with a hat-trick of fours, before Matthews also joined the party.

The partnership got to 50 in quick time and MI reached 65-1 at the halfway mark, needing 78 runs off the last 10 overs. They then pressed the accelerator, scoring another 50 runs in the next five overs and Sciver-Brunt brought up her third fifty of TATA WPL 2025 in the process en route to an unbeaten 75.

Matthews also brought up a fifty - her first of the season - during a 22-run over off Harris, before MI sealed the chase with three overs to spare.

Brief scores: Mumbai Indians 143/2 in 17 overs (Natalie Sciver-Brunt 75*, Hayley Matthews 59, Deepti Sharma 1-25) beat UP Warriorz 142/9 in 20 overs (Grace Harris 45, Vrinda Dinesh 33, Natalie Sciver-Brunt 3-18, Sanskriti Gupta 2-11).
