Ashleigh Gardner and her Gujarat Giants stormed back into winning ways with a commanding 6-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Match 12 of the TATA WPL 2025 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. A disciplined bowling effort set the tone early, restricting RCB to 125/7, before Gardner sealed the deal with a stunning 58 off 31 balls.
Facing off in a return fixture after their opening clash, GG exacted the perfect revenge, beating RCB on their home turf. With wickets at regular intervals by the GG bowlers and a captain’s knock from Ash Gardner to finish the chase in style, Gujarat Giants made a strong statement in their campaign.
Ash Gardner was awarded the Player of the Match and this was RCB’s third consecutive loss on their home turf.
Chasing 127, Gujarat Giants faced early setbacks as their opening woes continued. Beth Mooney and Dayalan Hemalatha fell inside the powerplay, both wickets going to Purple Cap holder Renuka Singh Thakur, who once again proved lethal with the new ball. Hemalatha’s dismissal was a moment of brilliance from Richa Ghosh behind the stumps, igniting the Chinnaswamy crowd.
But then came Ashleigh Gardner. The GG skipper wasted no time, unleashing an onslaught reminiscent of her fiery 79 against RCB earlier in the season. She tore into Prema Rawat in the ninth over, smashing 19 runs and putting Gujarat firmly in control. With a mix of powerful strokes and calculated aggression, she brought up her third fifty of the season, hammering back-to-back sixes off Georgia Wareham.
Gardner found an able partner in Phoebe Litchfield, who kept the scoreboard ticking with quick footwork and crafty reverse sweeps. Gujarat cruised past the 100-run mark, with Gardner departing for a scintillating 58 off 31, having all but sealed the win. Litchfield stayed unbeaten on 30 off 21, guiding GG home in style and handing RCB their third consecutive defeat.
Earlier, Ashleigh Gardner won the toss and put RCB into bat without hesitation. Deandra Dottin (2/31) set the tone early, conceding a boundary to Danni Wyatt-Hodge before trapping her LBW on the fifth ball of the over. Gujarat Giants kept the pressure on as skipper Gardner struck in her first over, removing the in-form Ellyse Perry.
RCB’s woes deepened when Smriti Mandhana fell to Tanuja Kanwer (2/16) in the sixth over, caught by Harleen Deol. At 26/3 by the end of the powerplay, RCB had a mountain to climb. Kanika Ahuja (33 off 28) and Raghvi Bist (22 off 19) dug in, rotating strike and finding the odd boundary to keep the scoreboard ticking.
Just as the partnership looked threatening at 48, chaos unfolded in the 12th over. Raghvi hammered Meghna Singh for a six but was dropped the very next ball by Gardner under the lights. However, GG didn’t have to wait long, as a direct hit from Bharti Fulmali found Raghvi short, turning despair into delight for Gujarat. Kanwer added to RCB’s troubles, plucking a well-judged return catch to send back well-set Kanika in the next over.
Richa Ghosh and Georgia Wareham (20* off 19) looked to rebuild, with Richa smashing a huge six off Dottin. But Gujarat’s bowlers struck at the right moments—Kashvee Gautam delivered a pinpoint yorker to clean up Richa, ensuring no partnership could take off. The lower order failed to provide a late flourish, and RCB could only manage 125/7. Gujarat Giants wrapped up a clinical bowling performance, keeping the pressure on from start to finish.
