Delhi Capitals completed a perfect double over Mumbai Indians, storming to the top of the TATA Women’s Premier League 2025 (WPL) points table with a dominant 9-wicket victory in Match 13. A stellar spin attack set the foundation before the opening duo of Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma ensured a comfortable chase.

DC’s spinners dictated terms early, dismantling MI’s middle order with precision. Minnu Mani (3/17) and Jess Jonassen (3/25) stifled Mumbai’s batters, restricting them to a modest 123/9. Jonassen’s match-winning spell, which rattled MI’s core, earned her the Player of the Match award which her second on the trot and thus proving why she is regarded as one of the best in the world.

Chasing 124, Delhi’s formidable opening pair—Meg Lanning (60* off 49) and Shafali Verma (43 off 28)—set the stage ablaze. Shafali, ever the aggressor, wasted no time, hammering 16 runs in the fourth over alone. Her fearless strokeplay was complemented by the ever-classy Lanning, who showcased her trademark composure. The duo brought up yet another fifty-run stand, propelling DC to 56/0 in the powerplay.

As MI desperately searched for a breakthrough, Harmanpreet Kaur introduced Amelia Kerr into the attack. However, Shafali had other plans, launching two colossal sixes to push Delhi closer to victory. By the ninth over, DC had raced to 82/0. Just when Shafali seemed set for a well-deserved fifty, Amanjot Kaur broke the stand with a stunning boundary catch by Kerr.

However, MI’s fightback came too late. Lanning, leading from the front, ensured there were no stumbles. She brought up her second fifty of the season and, in the process, became the all-time leading run-getter in WPL history, surpassing Ellyse Perry. Under her watchful eye, with assistance of Jemimah Rodrigues (15* off 10) Delhi wrapped up the chase with ease, securing their fourth win in six matches.

Earlier, Meg Lanning won the toss and, following the trend, opted to field first. MI openers Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews started positively, with Yastika clipping the first ball for four off Marizanne Kapp, while Matthews followed up with a back-foot punch. Matthews attacked Jonassen early, hitting back-to-back boundaries, but Shikha Pandey provided the breakthrough, dismissing Yastika. MI ended the powerplay at 35/1.

Annabel Sutherland struck soon after, removing the dangerous Matthews, caught by Shafali Verma. With two quick wickets, DC tightened their grip as Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt looked to rebuild. Harmanpreet briefly counterattacked, smashing Titas Sadhu for a six and a four, but Jonassen outfoxed her with a well-disguised arm ball. MI’s troubles deepened when Sciver-Brunt, the tournament’s leading run-scorer, fell to a sharp caught-and-bowled by Jonassen.

Minnu Mani further dented MI’s innings, dismissing S. Sajana and Amelia Kerr in quick succession. Sutherland added to MI’s misery with a spectacular diving catch to remove Kerr. It was one of the best catches from the season as she had to run, judge the catch and dive to complete a stunner of a catch. Jonassen wrapped up her stellar spell by dismissing G. Kamalini, sealing MI’s collapse.

DC’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding ensured MI never recovered, leaving them with a below-par total that their in-form openers chased down with ease. A clinical performance saw Delhi Capitals secure two crucial points and further establish their dominance in WPL 2025.
