In a high-octane encounter, Gujarat Giants pulled off a sensational 5-wicket win in Match 17 of the TATA Women’s Premier League (WPL), climbing to No.2 in the points table. It was a contest filled with momentum shifts, but GG held their nerve in the clutch moments, thanks to a match-winning knock from Harleen Deol (70* off 49). The stylish right-hander anchored the chase brilliantly, with crucial support from Beth Mooney (44 off 35), Deandra Dottin (24 off 10), and skipper Ashleigh Gardner (22 off 13).
Delhi Capitals, already assured of a playoff berth, fought valiantly in both departments. Meg Lanning led from the front with a scintillating 92 off 57, her best WPL score, propelling DC to a strong 177/5. However, despite their disciplined bowling effort, they couldn’t deny Gujarat’s fearless charge, as Harleen’s composure under pressure sealed a famous victory in the final over.
Chasing 178, Gujarat Giants got off to a shaky start as D. Hemalatha fell cheaply once again to the ever-reliable Shikha Pandey, who continued to make early inroads with the new ball. However, Beth Mooney and Harleen Deol showcased their class, counterattacking with composure and precision.
Despite managing just 38/1 in the powerplay, Mooney and Deol played with calculated aggression, threading exquisite boundaries to keep the scoreboard ticking. Mooney was sublime against spin, stepping out to find gaps with finesse, while Harleen timed her strokes to perfection. A dropped catch by Shafali Verma handed Deol a lifeline, and she made it count, guiding GG to 75/1 at the halfway mark.
The 85-run stand between these two was eventually broken as Minnu Mani dismissed Mooney (44 off 35) with a sharp catch by Annabel Sutherland at long-off. Skipper Ashleigh Gardner (22 off 13) arrived with intent, launching two monstrous sixes off Marizanne Kapp and Sutherland, but Shikha Pandey’s return spell ended her counterattack, shifting momentum once again.
Enter Deandra Dottin (24 off 10), who made an immediate impact, smashing a six off her first ball. Harleen, well set at the other end, continued to add elegant runs.
A twist came in the 18th over when Jess Jonassen’s brilliance turned the tide. Dottin’s fiery knock was cut short by a sensational diving catch from Jemimah Rodrigues, and Phoebe Litchfield departed next ball, leaving GG needing 16 off 12.
Shikha Pandey bowled a disciplined penultimate over, but a clutch six by Kashvee Gautam (9* off 3) in the last over of the match brought the target down to seven off the final over. Harleen, unfazed by the pressure, pierced the gap for a crucial boundary before sealing the chase with smart running between the wickets.
Her unbeaten knock, laced with nine fours and a six, was a masterclass in pacing a chase under pressure. Alongside Mooney’s assured presence, Gardner’s fearless striking, and Dottin’s late blitz, Harleen’s innings ensured GG crossed the line in a contest where nerves swayed till the very end.
Put into bat, Delhi Capitals got off to a flying start, thanks to their dynamic opening duo—Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma. Lanning signalled her intent early, smashing 12 runs in the first over, while Shafali followed with 14 in the next. Their attacking approach saw DC race to 51/0 in the powerplay, making the most of Gujarat Giants’ sloppy fielding.
The partnership flourished until Shafali fell for a brisk 40 off 27, caught at the ropes by Phoebe Litchfield off Meghna Singh. Lanning, undeterred, continued her masterclass. Harleen Deol in the 12th over could have had Lanning as almost pulled off a stunner. The DC skipper brought up her third fifty of WPL 2025 with a majestic six over extra cover, becoming the league’s all-time leading run-scorer.
Gujarat pulled things back with wickets of Jess Jonassen and Jemimah Rodrigues, but Lanning’s exquisite strokeplay kept DC ahead. She looked set for WPL’s first century but fell for a magnificent 92 off 57 (15 fours, 1 six) on the penultimate ball. Sarah Bryce finished in style with a six, taking DC to a formidable 177/5.
