A nerve-wracking last-ball finish gave Delhi Capitals (DC) a first win in the TATA Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 as they registered a two-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 2 of season three at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara.
Just when it seemed like MI were in control of the game after DC lost a flurry of wickets in the chase, debutant Niki Prasad's fighting 33-ball 35, Alice Capsey's 10-ball 21, and Radha Yadav's 9* off 4 balls took DC over the line in a dramatic finish. With two runs needed for victory off the final delivery, Arundhati Reddy survived a run-out by a matter of inches to see DC through.
After MI scored 164 on the back of Natalie Sciver-Brunt's 80*(59) and captain Harmanpreet Kaur's 42(22), Shafali Verma’s enterprising 18-ball 43 gave Delhi the foundation for the chase.
Earlier, Meg Lanning won the toss for DC and put MI into bat. Shikha Pandey was on the money right away, getting rid of the dangerous Hayley Matthews on the third ball of the match with Lanning taking an impressive catch at first slip. Just as Sciver-Brunt and Yastika Bhatia started to rebuild, Pandey came back and pulled the momentum DC’s way again by cleaning up Bhatia, thus reducing MI to 41/2 at the end of the powerplay.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur provided much-needed attacking impetus to the innings, scoring a fiery 22-ball 42. In the process, Kaur also became just the second Indian after Smriti Mandhana to complete 8000 T20 runs.
The duo of Kaur/Sciver-Brunt pushed MI to 87/2 at the halfway mark, before Kaur fell to Annabel Sutherland. Quick wickets at one end pegged MI back to 146/6 with four overs to go.
Sutherland (3-34) and Pandey (2-14) were the pick of the bowlers as DC bowled out MI, but not before Sciver-Brunt’s masterful unbeaten 80 ensured MI put up a fighting total of 164.
Shafali Verma was in her element from the get-go in the run-chase, hitting a six and four boundaries off the innings’ second over from Saika Ishaque. It was the Shafali show as DC scored 60 in the powerplay.
But MI struck twice in three deliveries with Verma’s cameo ending on 43(18) before Lanning (15) was cleaned up by Shabnim Ismail. A third huge strike followed as Jemimah Rodrigues walked back for just two runs, miscuing a drive to Kaur at extra cover off Kerr.
Sciver-Brunt hurt DC with ball in hand as well, striking timber to dismiss Sutherland in the very next over and reduce DC to 76-4 after 9 overs. Alice Capsey and debutant Niki Prasad - captain of India's U-19 World Cup winning side - kept the scoreboard ticking, but the MI bowlers restricted the boundary-scoring with DC left to score 44 runs in the last four overs.
Sarah Bryce’s 10-ball 21 with support from Prasad brought DC right back into it with the equation coming down to 21 off 12, before Yadav's six off the final delivery of the penultimate over meant that DC needed 10 to win off the final over. Prasad smashed a boundary off the first delivery of Sajeevan Sajana's final over, but there was more drama in store. With only two needed off the last two balls, Prasad holed out to deep mid-wicket. Yadav and Arundhati Reddy then pulled through a very close run-out call and completed two runs with DC getting two crucial points on the board.
Brief scores: Delhi Capitals 165/8 in 20 overs (Shafali Verma 43, Niki Prasad 35, Amelia Kerr 2-21, Hayley Matthews 2-32) beat Mumbai Indians 164/10 in 19.1 overs (Natalie Sciver-Brunt 80*, Harmanpreet Kaur 42, Annabel Sutherland 3-34, Shikha Pandey 2-14).
