Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) made it two wins out of two to kickstart their TATA Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 campaign, cruising to an eight-wicket win over Delhi Capitals (DC) in Match 4 at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara. Captain Smriti Mandhana registered her first half-century of the third season and also notched up her fastest TATA WPL fifty, reaching the milestone in just 27 deliveries.
Chasing 142 for victory, Mandhana (81 off 47) and Danii Wyatt-Hodge (42 off 33) were dominant from the first ball of the run chase, putting on 107 for the opening wicket as RCB chased down the total with 22 balls to spare. But the foundation for the victory was laid by brilliant bowling displays from player-of-the-match Renuka Singh Thakur (3-23) and Georgia Wareham (3-25).
Earlier, Mandhana won the toss and put Meg Lanning and DC in to bat. While RCB made just one change with Ekta Bisht replacing Prema Rawat, DC brought in the experienced duo of Marizanne Kapp and Jess Jonassen for Alice Capsey and Niki Prasad, who was the player-of-the-match against Mumbai Indians.
RCB could not have hoped for a better start as the dangerous Shafali Verma walked back for a golden duck, hitting the very first ball she faced straight to Mandhana at mid-off off Thakur.
After a cautious start, captain Lanning and Jemimah Rodrigues took the attack to RCB, completing a stroke-filled 50-run stand as DC surged to 55/1 inside the powerplay.
Rodrigues in particular was the enforcer, before a smart stumping from Richa Ghosh off Wareham ended her stay. Lanning followed soon after and RCB wrestled the momentum to peg back DC at 69/3 after 9 overs. Bisht - one of the oldest players in TATA WPL 2025 at the age of 39 - also joined in on the wickets and DC lost half their side for 87 inside the 12th over.
Bisht and Thakur combined to get the better of the experienced international trio of Annabel Sutherland, Kapp, and Jonassen. With four overs remaining and the score at 117/6, DC needed a huge push, but Thakur and Wareham denied them much joy.
The duo’s 3-fers to go with Bisht and Garth’s two wickets each bowled out DC for 141.
After missing out against GG, Mandhana was on fire with the bat from the get-go, hitting four boundaries and a six in an 18-ball 32* inside the powerplay itself as RCB put up 57/0.
While Mandhana got to her fifty off 27 balls in the ninth over, Wyatt-Hodge did not hold back as well and RCB rocketed to 102/0 in 10 overs. In what was otherwise a poor fielding display from DC, Rodrigues caught Wyatt-Hodge at deep cover off Arundhati Reddy to give DC a slight breather.
Mandhana, who hit 10 fours and three sixes on her way to 81, eventually perished, but RCB needed only nine more runs. Just as she did in the season opener, Richa Ghosh finished the game with a six as RCB completed the chase in 16.2 overs.
Brief scores: Royal Challengers Bengaluru 146/2 in 16.2 overs (Smriti Mandhana 81, Danni Wyatt-Hodge 42, Arundhati Reddy 1-25) beat Delhi Capitals 141/10 in 19.3 overs (Jemimah Rodrigues 34, Sarah Bryce 23, Renuka Singh Thakur 3-23, Georgia Wareham 3-25).
