Finalists from the first two seasons, Delhi Capitals (DC) jumped into the Top-2 of the TATA Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 table with a seven-wicket win over UP Warriorz (UPW) in a nail-biting finish to Match 6 of Season Three at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara. At the end of the Vadodara leg, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are sitting pretty at the top with four points as the winless UPW are bottom-placed.

After missing out against Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Meg Lanning - the highest run-scorer in TATA WPL history - was at her best against UPW. Her 49-ball 69 set up DC's chase of 167 perfectly before player-of-the-match Annabel Sutherland (41* off 35 to go with 2-26) and Marizanne Kapp (29* off 17) saw them through with only one ball to spare in a dramatic finish. Kiran Navgire's rapid 51(27) went in vain for UPW.

Earlier, DC captain Meg Lanning won the toss and, unsurprisingly, elected to bowl. Recognizing the need for a fast start, Navgire took the attack to the likes of Shikha Pandey, Marizanne Kapp, and Jess Jonassen, sending the ball all around the park. The opening stand between Navgire and Vrinda Dinesh was up to 58 after only five overs.

Navgire brought up a maiden TATA WPL fifty of only 24 deliveries, an innings that included six fours and three sixes.

However, DC’s spinners and the medium pace of Sutherland combined to orchestrate a collapse. First up, Sutherland dismissed both openers, with Dinesh (16 off 15) and Navgire (51 off 27) perishing while attempting big hits. Jonassen then got the better of compatriot Tahlia McGrath, courtesy of Sarah Bryce’s lightning-quick work behind the stumps. Bryce was spot on again as off-spinner Minnu Mani’s guile completely undid UPW captain Deepti Sharma and UPW suddenly found themselves at 83/4 at the 10-over mark.

Grace Harris and Shweta Sehrawat’s rebuilding effort added a crucial 36 runs to the total before Harris’ wicket, but DC were still in control of the innings with five overs to go. UPW’s desperate need for attacking impetus at the death was fulfilled by Chinelle Henry, who was regular captain Alyssa Healy’s replacement for TATA WPL 2025.

Ably supported by Sehrawat (37 off 33), TATA WPL debutant Henry’s power-packed 15-ball 33* helped UPW post a competitive 166/7. Sutherland’s 2-26 was the highlight of DC’s bowling comeback after Navgire’s initial blitz.

After a couple of poor starts together, Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma - the WPL’s most successful batting partnership - showed why they are a force to reckon with. Lanning (33* off 22 with seven fours) and Verma (25* off 14) powered DC to 59/0 in the powerplay.

After dropping Verma on the first ball of Deepti Sharma’s first over, Henry made amends later in the over as Verma skied one towards deep mid-wicket. One brought two with Ecclestone - the leading wicket-taker in the TATA WPL - striking as Jemimah Rodrigues’ paddle sweep went wrong and was gobbled up by Gaikwad.

Lanning was joined by fellow Australian Sutherland at 70/2, but the legendary Australian captain took it upon herself to lead the counter-punch, completing her half-century off 34 deliveries.

A blossoming partnership meant that DC were cruising at 116/2 after 14 overs. But Lanning was cleaned up soon after by Harris, who brought UPW right back into the game. Sutherland's cautiousness mixed with Kapp's aggression got DC closer and UPW wasted a massive opportunity as Alana King dropped Kapp on the last ball of the penultimate over from Sharma.

With 11 runs to get off the final over, Sutherland took charge with two boundaries off McGrath.

Then with only a run needed off the last two deliveries, UPW missed a simple run-out chance as Kapp made her ground to see DC through yet another thriller.

Brief scores: Delhi Capitals 167/3 in 19.5 overs (Meg Lanning 69, Annabel Sutherland 41, Marizanne Kapp 29, Grace Harris 1-11) beat UP Warriorz 166/7 in 20 overs (Kiran Navgire 51, Shweta Sehrawat 37, Chinelle Henry 33, Annabel Sutherland 2-26).
