Mumbai Indians (MI) spoiled Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) homecoming with a four-wicket win as yet another last-over thriller kickstarted the Bengaluru leg of the TATA Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025. 16-year-old G Kamalini held her nerve and sealed MI's win with a boundary with two runs needed off the final two deliveries. This was the third final-over finish in seven matches in TATA WPL 2025.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur's maiden fifty this season and Nat Sciver-Brunt's quick-fire 42 set up MI's chase. Player-of-the-match Amanjot Kaur, who took 3-22 with the ball in hand to help keep RCB down to 167 despite Ellyse Perry's scintillating 81, also created a huge impact with the bat as her unbeaten 27-ball 34 saw Mumbai through to their fourth win in six games against RCB. MI have now leapfrogged Delhi Capitals into second place on the points table with four points as RCB still lead the charts.
Earlier, MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur put Smriti Mandhana and RCB in to bat after winning the toss.
Mandhana put RCB on the front foot early on with five boundaries, including a massive six down the ground, all inside the first three overs and left the home crowd buzzing. Just when it seemed like the RCB skipper was set for another big outing, she was caught behind after top-edging a pull off Shabnim Ismail and Mandhana walked back for a fiery 13-ball 26.
Ellyse Perry - who had three 40+ scores and a 6-fer in her last three games against MI - took over with a brisk start herself.
A flurry of wickets at the other end though left RCB reeling at 57-4 in the eighth over. MI's stars from the previous game, Hayley Matthews and Nat Sciver-Brunt, struck as both Danni Wyatt-Hodge (9) and Raghvi Bist (1) perished while looking to go big. Kanika Ahuja was soon cleaned up by off-spinner Sanskriti Gupta who bagged her maiden TATA WPL wicket.
Then came RCB’s rebuild with Perry still playing the aggressor and Richa Ghosh uncharacteristically playing the anchor. However, just when the partnership hit the 50-run milestone, Amanjot Kaur knocked over Ghosh’s (28 off 25) off-stump to leave RCB at 108/5 with six overs to go. Kaur soon dismissed the dangerous Georgia Wareham for six.
But MI had no answer to Perry. She brought up a 30-ball 50 with a glorious four through cover, celebrated it with a huge six over long-on, and single-handedly powered the home side with 167/7 after 20 overs with 45 runs coming off the last four overs.
Perry (81 off 43) walked back on the penultimate ball of the innings to a stand ovation after registering her career-best WPL score, dismissed by Amanjot Kaur (3-22), the pick of the MI bowlers.
Having already registered a superb start to this season with back-to-back fifties, MI's Sciver-Brunt continued her purple patch, and her 18-ball 41* inside the powerplay propelled MI to 66/2.
She failed to make it a hat-trick of fifties, getting beaten by a Garth off-cutter that crashed into the stumps, but her 42 off 21 set up MI well with the dynamic duo of Kaur and Amelia Kerr out in the middle. Kerr's dismissal (2 off 6) soon after capped off a brief collapse though, similar to RCB's in the middle part of their innings, and MI were 82-4 after 10 overs, still needing 86.
The first six of MI's innings came in the 16th over, courtesy of skipper Harmanpreet who put on a 62-run stand with Amanjot Kaur, with Harmanpreet reaching her sixth WPL fifty in the process. The visitors were cruising with only 24 needed off the last three overs. But then came a stunning Georgia Wareham over, which saw only two runs being conceded along with the big wicket of Harmanpreet (50 off 38) and Sajeevan Sajana off consecutive deliveries.
Suddenly, RCB were on top with MI needing 22 off the last two overs, before Amanjot's two sixes in the penultimate over off Ahuja led to another momentum shift. With two needed off the last two deliveries, teenager Kamalini carved one through the covers to sign off a memorable victory. MI have now won four of their six games against RCB.
Brief scores: Mumbai Indians 170/6 in 19.5 overs (Harmanpreet Kaur 50, Amanjot Kaur 34, Georgia Wareham 3-21) beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru 167/7 in 20 overs (Ellyse Perry 81, Richa Ghosh 28, Amanjot Kaur 3-22).
